Music Theory & Exam Preparation

Structured music theory lessons for students who would like to improve their understanding of music, as well as those preparing for ABRSM music theory exams.

What Lessons Cover

Lessons may include reading musical notation, rhythm, time signatures, scales, key signatures, intervals, chords, cadences, transposition, musical terms and score reading.

Lessons are suitable for beginners, instrumental students who need extra theory support, and students working towards Grade 5 theory. Music theory helps students read music more confidently, understand how music is put together, and develop stronger musicianship alongside their practical lessons.

Each lesson is adapted to the student’s level, with clear explanations and practical exercises to help them understand each topic step by step.

ABRSM Music Theory Exam Preparation

For students preparing for ABRSM music theory exams, lessons follow a structured approach to build both knowledge and exam confidence.

Preparation may include written exercises, exam-style questions, printed practice papers, online practice resources and mock exams. Students are guided through the exam format carefully so they know what to expect and how to approach each type of question.

Intensive Grade 5 Music Theory Lessons

I also offer focused support for students preparing for the ABRSM Grade 5 music theory exam.

These lessons are suitable for students who need to prepare within a shorter timeframe, revise key topics, improve exam technique or build confidence before taking the exam. The pace and structure of the lessons will depend on the student’s current level and how much preparation time is available.

Online Music Theory Lessons

Online music theory lessons are also available, making them suitable for students who prefer to learn from home or need additional support alongside their instrumental lessons.
